Top 5 Disturbing Horror Films With Stressful Endings

If you judged my book by its cover you wouldn’t think I’d be such a horror film lover. I’ve seen countless films in the genre from the originals to the remakes. I literally find a horror or thriller to fall asleep to at night and end up staying up later because I get so into it.

With that being said it takes a special kind of film to truly frighten me or disturb me. The blood and gore really doesn’t get me it’s the ones that leave the lead protagonist(s) in, for a lack of better words, fucked up situations that seem impossible and are impossible to defeat. It got me to thinking about a post for Glamberween to share my top 5 disturbing horror films with endings that still bother me. I’ll try to be as spoiler free as possible in case you want to check these films out later. First up…

“Honeymoon” (2014)

This is a film I had to revisit and I’m glad I did. It stars Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway as newlywed couple Bea and Paul going on, you guessed it, their honeymoon. The couple travels to a remote cabin that has been in Bea’s family for some time. It’s all laughing and love making until Bea runs into childhood friend Will (Ben Huber) at a local restaurant and things get strange. After Bea is found naked in the woods and blames sleepwalking, her behavior changes as Paul tries to figure out what happened to his wife.

Rose and Harry really show off their acting chops in this film going from a loving to estranged couple in a span of the film’s running time. This is one of those situations where you are hoping for a happy ending, but it’s just not and you have to watch to the very end to see why.

“Would You Rather” (2012)

This film is one of those things that if you watch enough it becomes a comedy but there are still so many disturbing aspects to it that it has to go on my list.

Iris (Brittany Snow) in desperate need for money to help her sick brother agrees to attend a dinner party hosted by The Lambrick foundation. Things go SO wrong when Iris and the rest of the guests realize what kind of deadly game they signed up for. And just when you think things work out for the sort of best, you’re wrong.

“Funny Games” (2007)

I’m pretty sure I blogged about this film before because it’s just so disturbing. This is a shot by shot remake of the Austrian film of the same name and stars Naomi Watts and Tim Roth. The couple, along with their son, travel to their remote vacation home when a pair of “neighbors” come to pay a visit. No one is safe not even the son in this film and it’s just a sad ending.

“Buried” (2010)

While this film takes place solely in one location your emotions will be all over the place. Ryan Reynolds stars as Paul Conroy, a U.S. truck driver who finds himself buried alive with only a lighter and dying cell phone. The claustrophobia is real in this movie as secrets about Paul are revealed. Will he make it out the coffin alive. I’ll never tell you if he does.

“Open Water” (2003)

I think the thing about “Open Water” is the vulnerability the characters face being forgotten about and then being left in the middle of the ocean to survive. This ending still bothers me. It’s just not right.

“Saw: The Final Chapter” (2010)
All the “Saw” films are pretty messed up, but this one in particular stuck with me because a true innocent character was the victim of a Jigsaw game. A liar convinced people that he was a survivor of the Jigsaw games to gain a book deal and a career even though he truly wasn’t. “Jigsaw” caught wind of this and put this man and his team to the test. Some knew of his lies while others didn’t. Everyone lost and it’s really messed up.
