In a series of tweets, Grande tweeted the news to her fans first posting, “hi i have to tell you something very very exciting today. Most of you know that i’m really just a musical theater geek…. like a really big one… so…. my heart is very full re: this announcement.”
Once the “Into You” singer realized her fans already the news she then tweeted, “omg bbs how do u know already i’m CRYING. I AM NOWWW A CHECKERBOARD CHICK #HairsprayLive #Penny.”
She then shared how the role was a dream for her. “Penny has been a dream role since Hairspray opened on Broadway. At 9, I was (and still am) in LOVE w @KerryButlerNyc. hope to make u proud 😭, anyway… I’m so honored and beyond excited to be a part of this dream cast…… I will for sure pass out at the table read. #HairsprayLive.”
Grande will be joining newbie Maddie Baillio (Tracy Turnblad), Kristin Chenoweth (Velma Von Tussle), Jennifer Hudson (Motormouth Maybelle), Harvey Fierstein (Edna Turnblad), Martin Short (Wilbur Turnblad), and Derek Hough(Corny Collins).
Hairspray Live! premieres December 7th on NBC.
