We were was once in the era when vampires and werewolves were all the rage, think back a good three to fives years ago when they were at a peak of making a comeback but now that the hype fizzled out there, witches and witchcraft have taken over that golden spot of the new/old thing to come back in style, entertainment wise. There was FX’s American Horror Story: Coven and Lifetime’s Witches of East End, but that wasn’t enough. Sony Pictures is now in the works to recreate the 1996 cult horror movie film “The Craft.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, up-and-coming horror filmmaker Leigh Janiak has been enlisted to write and direct the remake of “The Craft” with the help of Phil Graziadei, her co- script writer from “Honeymoon,” which FYI I stumbled upon on Netflix and I can’t remember if it was good or not.
The original film starred Robin Tunney as Sarah, a quiet teen who moved to a new town, started a new school, and eventually joined in with the ranks of three outcast teenagers girls Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle (Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True) who studied and practiced witchcraft, unbeknownst that they just recruited an actual, powerful witch in their ranks. The power struggle really kicks off when all the girls started to experience powers using them for good and evil making it a dark, yet hilarious iconic movie of the ’90’s.
Fairuza Balk, who is no stranger to playing a witch, she played Mildred Hubble in the 1986 TV Movie The Worst Witch – one of my favs I might add, and playing a key character in “The Craft,” had her choice words about the remake. On Twitter she posted, “You guys are so sweet! It doesn’t surprise me much. Sony made a lot of money off the craft & obviously see it as a way to make more,” responding to the massive feedback once the announcement of the reboot was made. She added, “Personally I don’t care for the idea of remakes. There are great scripts & ideas out there that have yet to be made!”
The film’s original producer Doug Wick is said to return alongside Lucy Fisher, who was vice chairman of Columbia when the first movie was made, but will that make a difference to avid fans of the film?
